In 2012, the Renault Group, which has been building cars since 1898, sold more than 2.5 million vehicles in 128 countries. The Group currently employs almost 128,000 people and operates 38 manufacturing sites.

The Renault Group’s stated ambition to become “a pioneer of sustainable mobility for all” demands a whole new way of thinking about issues such as pollution, climate change and urban congestion. In other words, the Group's challenge is to contribute to a sustainable ecosystem that meets the aspirations of both customers and citizens alike.

In order to meet these environmental and economic challenges, Renault seeks to improve its existing technologies, through the development of next-generation, low-emission combustion engines. It is also a pioneer in "Zero Emissions" technologies, with a comprehensive range of electric vehicles that help to reduce urban air pollution and eliminate the noise and odours associated with traditional engines.

The Group launched Fluence ZE and Kangoo ZE in 2011. This was followed in 2012 by Twizy, an innovative compact urban vehicle, and ZOE, the first 100% electric vehicle released in 11 countries. Renault is now cementing its position at the top of Europe's electric vehicle market, where it holds around 50% of the market share (excluding Twizy). It is also the global leader through its Alliance with Nissan.

The Group is also leading a fundamental shift in the concept of mobility and its associated practices – a process involving all relevant stakeholders. One example of this commitment is the Sustainable Mobility Institute, which was founded in 2009 and brings together Renault engineers and lecturers, researchers and students from ParisTech. Together, they conduct research and teaching activities focusing on the future of transport from all angles (business model, macroeconomic challenges, electric vehicle consumer research, battery technologies, etc.).

By joining forced with the Paris-Saclay New Mobilities Challenge, the Group is seeking to help today's students imagine the innovative eco-mobility solutions of the future.
